Ramadan: It's Not Only About Fasting
As the biggest holy month for Muslims, Ramadan is usually known worldwide as a month of fasting. Muslims do not eat or drink between dawn and sunset during this month of Ramadan. Fasting during Ramadan is necessary as it helps Muslims to dedicate themselves to their faith and to be closer to God.
The fasting month starts on today, 24 April 2020, and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days. Fasting is mandatory to all adult Muslims who are not chronically ill, traveling, the elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, diabetic, or menstruating. The predawn meal is referred to as suhur, and the nightly feast that breaks the fast is called iftar. Muslims also refrain not only from food and drink, but also from tobacco products, sexual relations, and sinful behavior.

However, Ramadan is not just a month when Muslims stand away from food, but all that they do this month causes them to develop and recharge faith. Based on the principles of how Muslims live their lives called Five Pillars of Islam, besides fasting there are other foundations, namely faith, prayer, faith, prayer, charity, and making the pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.
According to the principles, Ramadan is also a time for spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds, and spending time with relatives. Muslims usually tend to read the Quran more than usual while reflect on themselves as a person and to identify areas in need of change. Muslims also make an extra effort to connect with their neighborhoods and reach out to those in need of support.

At the end of Ramadan, there is a special festival to mark the end of Ramadan and the beginning of the next lunar month. That is called Eid al-Fitr which falls on 23 May 2020. On this celebration day, Muslims held a mass prayer in open areas like fields, community centers, or mosques. Muslims also visit their relatives and have a meal together on this special day.
